![]() If we interacted with Breath of the Wild on a micro level (scaling cliff sides, setting fire to the brush outside an enemy camp, collecting arrows that were embedded in our shield, to name a few examples), Tears of the Kingdom goes even deeper after nearly 70 hours, I feel as if I can control its very molecules.Īs one of the few direct sequels in the Zelda series, Tears of the Kingdom opens not long after the end of Breath of the Wild. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, producer Eiji Aonuma, and their team have crafted a layered world in which self-driven experimentation is paramount in traversal, combat, and discovery. With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo has receded even further into the background. It was also, it turns out, just an overture. īreath of the Wild was a design watershed, an engineering marvel, and an encouraging sign that Nintendo was beginning to loosen its grip. When we award the Polygon Recommends badge, it’s because we believe the recipient is uniquely thought-provoking, entertaining, inventive, or fun - and worth fitting into your schedule. They just deal too much damage over too long time. Once you've figured out the basics of the game, looking at the wiki will improve your experience so you don't end up investing in builds that don't work out. Also, Poison and Burn are seriously overpowered, even with the mods and cures. When planning your character's build, you'll find out that most of the gear wouldn't really work out because there's simply a better one that isn't necessarily harder to get. UnbalancedAs said above, the game isn't balanced. (A few hits and you die, on the other hand it may well take half a day for you to beat the relatively ridiculously powerful opponent, and if they spawn minions, you won't even be able to kill the minions and they'll keep increasing to the hundreds) And then your character dies with all the progress that doesn't carry over (some do) because you didn't know that you're totally unprepared and underleveled to fight the boss.I recommend checking the wiki before fighting the story final boss so that you have an idea how strong your character needs to be, or you might just waste your character.2. Entering new areas feels exciting, intriguing and thrilling as you throw yourself to new situations against enemies you don't know you can beat, and there's a feeling of anticipation that the area's boss may suddenly show up any moment especially when you're not familiar with the spawning behavior for that boss yet.The bad:1.Ībrupt difficulty spike on story questsThe story final bosses are invariably harder than anything you face on the story quests before, and the difference is so abrupt that if you didn't know about this you'll just get curb-stomped. Immersive and enjoyable in a retro kind of way.Good pixel graphics on the enemies, background an environment, interesting looking NPCs, and spot on BGM makes for a nice atmosphere. While not everything is balanced, you still have quite a few choices to make even if you aim for a plausible build.3. Character customizability. There are many ways to configure your character, from the class-style (which weapon and stats you specialize in), which active/passive skills to equip and what equipment modifiers to use. ![]() Meaning there's always something left to do, for a very, very long time, whether to make your character stronger, do something you haven't done before, or just unlock new things that aren't necessarily useful, but you do for the progress.2. A whole lot of stuff to figure out and unlock. From crafting recipes to character creation settings, there's a huge amount of unlockables, some are easy to unlock, some are hard, and some can take a really, really long time to unlock. Posted: 1 AprilIt has considerable flaws, but also a lot of its own unique charm, and overall it's a good time killer. The good:1.
